79-year-old man dies after Elgin crash

A 79-year-old man died Tuesday afternoon following a two-car crash in Elgin.

The Elgin police and fire departments responded at about 12:05 p.m. to a crash involving two vehicles at the intersection of Airlite Street and Country Knolls Lane, police said in a news release.

The preliminary investigation shows the victim was driving a 2011 Chevrolet Silverado north on Airlite Street when it sideswiped a 2010 Volkswagen Routan, then struck a parkway tree on the west side of the street, the release stated.

The driver of the Routan, a 39-year-old woman, suffered minor leg injuries and was taken to a hospital.

The driver of the Silverado was transported to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead. His identity is being withheld pending notification of relatives, police said.

The Kane County Coroner’s office will conduct an autopsy to determine the cause of death.

The Elgin police traffic unit continues to investigate the crash. Anyone with relevant information is encouraged to call (847) 289-2661.
