Palatine Sikh temple remembers Sandy Hook

A Wisconsin police officer labeled a hero for his efforts to save lives at a mass shooting outside a Sikh temple last year will be among the speakers Saturday when the Sikh Religious Society Palatine hosts an interfaith candlelight vigil to mark the anniversary if the Sandy Hook Elementary School shootings.

The public event, described as a display of American solidarity against senseless violence, takes place from 4 to 5:30 p.m. at the society, 1280 Winnetka St. in Palatine. It will feature prayers, a candlelight vigil and remarks by dignitaries, interfaith, community and political leaders. All are invited to Langar, or community meal, afterward.

Among the speakers will be former Oak Creek (Wis.) police lieutenant Brian Murphy, who survived 15 gunshots suffered when he responded to the Aug. 5, 2012 shooting at the Sikh Temple of Wisconsin.
