Volunteerism should be in curriculum

Volunteerism should be in curriculum

As a college student and a veteran, I look around to our neighborhoods and I am concerned about the teenagers’ involvement into our beloved community. I believe volunteer work should be incorporated into our high school direct agenda. This time should be more focused toward our freshmen and sophomore students, giving more time for the juniors and seniors to worry about ACTs, SATs and college applications.

These students, age 14 to 17, should be able to look past their bubble of their own social circles along with knowing the value of a helping and reaching out to those who need it. Not only will they expand the student communitywide but will also contribute to their health. It has been shown that volunteering lowers stress and lowers risk of cardiovascular disease.

With so many positive outcomes, students should be required to acquire volunteer hours during their time within our community.
