Fire hits portable classroom at Naperville school

Firefighters are investigating the cause of a blaze that did more than $100,000 damage Friday to a portable classroom at Naperville’s Scott Elementary School.

Naperville Unit District 203 Superintendent Dan Bridges said the portable classroom houses Safe N’ Sound, a YMCA program that provides after-school care for youngsters. He said the fire will not disrupt regular classes at the school.

No injuries were reported in the fire that was largely confined to the area above the ceiling in the portable classroom at 500 Warwick Drive, officials said.

Authorities said 24 firefighters responded at 12:23 p.m. to multiple reports of a fire in one of the school’s portable classrooms.

The first units arrived on the scene three minutes later and found flames burning through the roof of the structure. No one was inside at the time.

The fire was brought under control within 15 minutes, authorities said. The fire did not reach the main school building or the other portable classroom.

District 203’s director of buildings and grounds has secured the portable classroom and officials said the Safe N’ Sound program will continue as scheduled Monday in a different location at Scott School.
