Bitter words led to life of political activity

I was a 17-year-old student in English class at Arlington High School when the news was announced overhead that the president had been shot. Our student teacher said, “It’s about time somebody got him.” I looked at the teacher and gasped, “How dare you say something like that.” He replied, “I hate him and his politics.”

When it was announced JFK had died, the teacher merely shrugged his shoulders. While sobbing, I just kept wondering why anyone would be filled with such contempt. It was at that moment I became politically intrigued and active. Thus, I have spent the last 50 years helping in any way I can to ensure no one with such hatred in his/her heart gets elected to any office in this great country. To say the least, the last five years have been challenging!
