God absent from same-sex marriages

In all the furor over legislation concerning same sex marriage there is one important factor that has been largely overlooked.

Marriage was not created by the mandate of any government or legislature. It was instituted by God. A genuine marriage is a covenant between three parties — one man, one woman and God Himself. Marriage is an earthly representation of Christ’s relationship to his church.

I empathize with those who are yearning to marry someone they love. But if they have a relationship with God they must realize that even if the Illinois legislature misguidedly legalizes same sex marriage and even if they find some aberrant clergy member to perform the ceremony, God will be absent from their union. It will be a marriage in name only, a sham of a relationship. The state of Illinois does not have the power to validate same sex marriage. God’s will cannot be swayed by legislation or adjudication. God does not change. He is the same yesterday, today and tomorrow. If he were not we would not be able to trust and depend on Him to see us through this life and into the next.

This is not an issue that can be “won” in Springfield or even the United States Supreme Court. It has already been decided — and there is no court of appeal.
