Buffalo Grove soldiers honored for service

Buffalo Grove honored two veterans of World War II at this week's village board meeting.

Al Kamikow, who fought at the Battle of Normandy, received the Bronze Star and the Purple Heart, and Friday was being honored by the French government with the French Legion of Honor medal for his service to the French people. Kamikow, 90, has lived in Buffalo Grove for almost 30 years.

Irving Weiner, who left high school to serve, was wounded in the invasion of the island of Iwo Jima, a battle with Japanese troops in which one out of every four soldiers was wounded or killed. He was awarded a Purple Heart and, in 2002, he was granted his high school diploma.

Last week, he flew on an Honor Flight to Washington, D.C., to visit the war memorials.

Weiner has lived with his wife of 67 years in Buffalo Grove for almost 30 years. He has three children, four grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
