Dominick’s closings may mean 5,600 lost jobs

CHICAGO — More than 5,600 workers could lose their jobs when the Dominick’s grocery chain closes all its unsold Chicago area stores at the end of the year.

That’s according to documents filed with the Illinois Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity.

The monthly Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification Act report — called a WARN notice — says the grocer could cut 5,633 jobs, including more than 3,200 in Cook County. Another 970 are in DuPage County, while about 700 are in Lake County. The remainder of the jobs are in Will, McHenry, Kendall and Kane counties.

The grocer’s parent company, Safeway, announced in October that it’d leave the Chicago market by early next year.

Only four of the 72 Dominick’s stores in the Chicago area have been sold so far.
