Chicago officials say a renovation of the city's 911 call center will improve service and make the whole operation cheaper to run.

He announced Wednesday that the upgrades have been completed. It was the first full renovation of the call center since the city's police and fire departments consolidated their dispatch operations nearly 20 years ago.
The renovation included installing new software and new radio and voice logging systems. Officials say that by replacing outdated systems the city will save more than $1.6 million per year in maintenance costs.
