After 20 years, Millrose Restaurant, Banquets & Country Store has won the restaurant numbers game undoubtedly because of its consistently delicious food, gorgeous location and richly rustic ambience. Millrose, located on Barrington Road and just off I-90 in South Barrington, consists of six 125-year-old massive barns that house the restaurant, banquet rooms and Millrose Country Store. In summer, diners adore lolling on beautiful outdoor patios dotted with umbrella-covered tables but the roaring fireplaces inside serve as a wonderful welcome to winter visitors, too.

Executive Chef Paul Mosur balances his part of the successful equation by offering everyone from cooing couples to energetic families an “America the Beautiful” menu that begs a return visit. Start simply with a jumbo cornbread muffin stippled with honey butter or savor the Millrose Sampler for two with ribs, wings, pickle chips and sausage meatballs. For something au courant, ask about the flatbread of the day or try Rose’s Korean pork tacos: Hoisin stir-fried pork shoulder topped with kimchee slaw and chili cilantro sauce stuffed into flour tortillas. Soups and salads aren’t just slapdash nibbles at Millrose — choose among baked French onion, hearty beef vegetable, soup of the day or a perky chili studded with beef, chorizo and smoked pork. The Steakhouse BLT salad packs a flavor and protein punch with tenderloin tips, Bleu cheese crumbles, Rose’s thick cut bacon, beer battered onion rings and tomatoes.

Millrose Restaurant is famous for its baby back ribs that are served with crisp, hot fries and fresh coleslaw — they’re the Holy Grail of grilling and nothing is more delicious, fun to eat and addicting. You can buy the ribs in the Country Store either raw or cooked with Millrose’s own original barbecue sauce. If anyone should know something about pork, it’s owner Bill Rose. Five generations of the Rose family have been perfecting the fine art of pork processing, after all.

Regulars sing the praises of chef’s Pecan Crusted Walleye Pike served with cranberry butter and Jumbo Shrimp prepared with your choice of coconut batter, baked with garlic herb butter, tempura style or in zesty bacon and jalapeño fashion. When in need of comfort food, look no farther than slow-roasted beef pot roast or Yia Yia’s roasted Greek chicken fragrant with lemon and oregano.

Steak lovers won’t be disappointed by the quality or price of Millrose’s 21-day aged choice cut steaks, which are served with a baked potato and broccoli. Millrose offers classic steak sides like creamed spinach, roasted mushrooms and twice-baked potatoes, as well as surprises like German fried potatoes, wild rice pilaf and sweet potato tots.

If you find that you can psychically divine a restaurant’s dessert menu because they’re essentially all the same (cheesecake, creme brulee, ice cream and chocolate cake, ho-hum), you haven’t been to Millrose. How about a thick slice of Pistachio Gelato Pie (chocolate crispy wafer crust, Nutella chocolate sauce and whipped cream) or rich, dark chocolate Warm Kahlua Lava Cake topped with vanilla gelato? Can’t decide? Order any three desserts in a “mini” version for an easy $6 or all five for $10 (the price you’d pay for one dessert in the city).

A half-dozen banquet and party rooms, some with floor-to-ceiling fireplaces, leather couches and wingback chairs and others with an outside terrace and a parquet dance floor, play host to sit-down meals, cocktail receptions, conferences, intimate gatherings and events for up to 250 people.
