Thoughtful couple returned lost dog

I live in Lake Zurich, and about 9 p.m. on a recent night, my beagle broke off her leash in the back yard and wandered into the wetlands behind my property. When she gets on the trail of something, she does a lot of barking, so being pitch black out, I grabbed a flashlight and went in the wetlands after her.

After several hours in the dark, including once falling into a retention pond, struggling to find my way home to shower and returning to search some more, I eventually decided to go back home and wait till dawn to retrieve my dog.

As before, I could not find my way out and it took me about two hours to finally get out of the wetlands again. I walked back home, showered again and lay down for the night, when around 4:30 a.m., I got a call from a woman who said she and her husband found a dog caught up in the water by the remains of a broken rope and that she and were able to get her out. They saw my name and phone number on her tag so they called me.

I was willing to go get the dog, but they were so nice that they drove my dog to my house to give her back to me. I offered a reward, but they were so nice, they wouldn’t take it.

I never got their name or address nor do I know who they are, so I am hoping a letter to the editor will give them some recognition on being such nice and thoughtful people.
