Marvin Straub named Man of the Year by Elgin Riverside Club

Long time rural Elgin resident Marvin Straub has been named the 2013 “Man of the Year” by the Elgin Riverside Club.

Straub has lived and farmed in rural Elgin for the past six decades. A banquet will be held in his honor on Saturday, Sept. 21, at the Riverside Club, 21 Lincoln Ave., Elgin.

The organization is among one of Elgin’s oldest, established in 1886. The club has a broad spectrum of membership. In 1986 women were allowed to attend the gatherings and functions of the club.

The organization currently has over 200 active members. Fundraisers are held by the club benefit many local charities. Straub is a 1950 graduate of Elgin High and began his farming career in Cook County. He married Marilyn Peterson in 1954, whom he met at a rural youth social; they will celebrate their 60th anniversary on Feb. 19, 2014.

In 1955 they moved from Cook County to their farm, west of Elgin, where they have been engaged in farming since that time. They were blessed with four children, Ron (Nancy) Straub, Elgin; Lynne (Jeff) Turk, Elgin; Laurie (Jim) Dotter, Boulder, Co.; and Steve (Tracy) Straub, Elgin. The Straubs have 12 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

In addition to being actively involved in many of the Riverside Club functions, most notably Straub has co-hosted the Fall Pig Roast and roasted the pig, for this event, for the past 20 years, which is held each September at the club.

Organizations that Straub is involved in and has previously held positions in include Kane County Farm Bureau, director; Burlington Central School District 301 board member and Central Sports Booster Club, president; Kane County Livestock Feeders, president; and Pingree Grove Countryside Fire District, trustee. Straub was a 4-H member as a youth, and aided many children with their projects in 4-H over the years. For the past 25 years he has been a livestock superintendent for the Kane County Fair. Straub is also a member of St. Paul’s United Church of Christ.

Straub enjoys hunting and playing cards. He is also an avid sports fan and enjoys listening to country music.

This honor was selected by a committee of former “Men of the Year” recipients of the Riverside Club. Marv became a member of the Riverside club in May 1995.
