Cops: Second driver strikes Naperville gym

One Naperville gym has been hit by a plane, and now another has been struck by a car — twice.

A motorist accused of DUI crashed into Midwest Fit Club in south Naperville on Thursday afternoon, damaging a window and cracking the building’s foundation, authorities said.

Ruth Erdemir, 57, of Naperville, was pulling into a parking spot at 5019 Ace Lane to pick up a relative who was working out, Naperville police Sgt. Louis Cammiso said. When she arrived about 4:25 p.m., she drove into a window and a brick wall at the gym near Route 59 and 111th Street.

Midwest Fit Club co-owner Shane Herman said this is the second time the building has been struck by a car, although the first happened almost two years ago — a week before he and co-owner Steve Arch took over the facility from Cardinal Fitness.

Police said no one was injured and no equipment at was damaged in Thursday’s crash, which happened about three years after a small private plane crashed into an XSport Fitness location near Route 59 and 75th Street.

Herman said he is glad the situation at Midwest Fit Club did not play out differently.

“She would have driven straight into the building if she was just another two feet to the left,” he said.

Erdemir appeared to be under the influence of alcohol at the time of the crash, Cammiso said, and she was charged with DUI after she was treated and released at Edward Hospital.

The 24-hour gym closed for about five hours after the crash so the structure could be inspected for integrity and repairs could begin, Herman said. It reopened Friday morning with work on the window and foundation to continue throughout the day.
