A Downers Grove man is charged with the shooting death of his 61-year-old mother. DuPage County State’s Attorney Robert B. Berlin and Burr Ridge Chief of Police John Madden announced yesterday that first-degree murder charges have been filed against Michael Zaky Bassaly, 27. Full story

Fight with suspects sends deputies, detective to hospital

Two Lake County deputies and a detective were hospitalized and four people are in custody after a fight yesterday afternoon in an unincorporated area near Grayslake. The incident took place about 1:45 p.m. on the 17300 block of West Dartmoor Drive. Full story

Buffalo Grove Days kicks off

Months of hard work by more than 50 volunteers began to pay off last night as community members began to pour in for the first night of the 2013 Buffalo Grove Days festival. On the opening night of the fest people enjoyed a Bingo tournament, carnival rides, beer tent and tastings from more than 16 local restaurants. Full story

Illinois House Republicans pick Durkin as leader

Illinois Republicans yesterday chose a suburban lawmaker to lead their House caucus in Springfield after his lone opponent, a longtime friend, bowed out. Rep. Jim Durkin of Western Springs was elected by acclamation. The former prosecutor is known for his command for criminal law and his measured, if pointed, rebukes during debate on the House floor. Goliath roller coaster at Great America to be fastest, tallest, steepest

When it opens next year, the new wooden roller coaster planned for Six Flags Great America in Gurnee immediately will live up to its name as a giant in the amusement industry. Goliath will be a “world record breaking behemoth of a ride,” park President Hank Salemi told a crowd of about 100 coaster enthusiasts yesterday at the groundbreaking. Full story with video.

Round Lake girl who drowned identified

A girl who drowned this week in Fox Lake was publicly identified yesterday as 9-year-old Mireya Elizabeth Cardenas of Round Lake. Lake County sheriff’s police are investigating the case of the Fremont Intermediate School student. Full story.
