Northern Indiana city to honor rescuers of 6-year-old boy

MICHIGAN CITY, Ind. — A 6-year-old Illinois boy who was rescued after being trapped beneath 11 feet of sand for more than three hours is expected to return to northern Indiana along with his parents to thank those who freed him.

Michigan City is hosting a pair of events Wednesday to recognize those involved in rescuing Nathan Woessner of Sterling, Ill. The boy was rescued July 12 from beneath a sand dune at the Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore.

Gov. Mike Pence is scheduled to attend the ceremony at 11 a.m. Central time at City Hall. Another event honoring the rescuers is scheduled at Blue Chip Casino.

Nathan was hospitalized for two weeks but has recovered and has started first grade. The National Park Service is trying to determine what caused Nathan to become trapped.
