Cook county commissioners want three Metra board to resign

A group of suburban Cook County commissioners is calling for the resignation of three of the remaining six Metra board members.

The three Metra board members all represent Cook County: former Arlington Heights Mayor Arlene Mulder, Don De Graff, and William Widmer.

Cook County Commissioners Elizabeth “Liz” Doody Gorman, Gregg Goslin, Timothy O. Schneider and Peter N. Silvestri said Tuesday that the public lacks confidence in these board members and particularly faulted the Metra directors for failing to consider liability insurance which could have saved them from approving an up-to-$718,000 severance package for former Metra CEO Alex Clifford.

“A clean start is needed to restore the public’s confidence in Metra,” Gorman said in a statement.

The call for resignations is part of a resolution filed by the commissioners Tuesday. It will be taken up at the next Cook County Board meeting Sept. 11.

The resolution also urged the Metra board to take no substantive action regarding the hiring of a new CEO or appointment of a chairman until a new 11-person board has been seated. On Tuesday, Metra’s board hired a new interim CEO, Don Orseno.
