Bonfire embers sparked Naperville house fire

Embers from a grill that was used to create a bonfire apparently sparked an accidental blaze that caused roughly $100,000 damage to a Naperville house earlier this week, authorities said Friday.

The fire began about 3 a.m. Thursday at a home on the 1000 block of Prairie Court, roughly a half-hour after one of the homeowner’s sons thought he had extinguished a bonfire made in a grill, Naperville police said.

Fire Division Chief Mark Ziemnik said embers from the grill sparked the fire on the home’s wooden deck.

Flames were starting to reach the house by the time firefighters arrived five minutes after they were called.

The fire was brought under control in 11 minutes and the bulk of the flames were confined to the deck and family room, with what authorities called a “slight extension” into the home’s basement. Firefighters said there were moderate amounts of smoke damage inside the house and it was deemed uninhabitable.

No one was injured in the blaze.
