Lincoln Tomb plans historic events

SPRINGFIELD — Illinois’ Lincoln Tomb State Historic Site will have presentations next month on Abraham Lincoln’s least-known son and about black heroes of the Civil War.

The Historic Preservation Agency announced Monday that presentations on Lincoln’s son, Edward Baker Lincoln, and Civil War heroes, will be on Sept. 7. The historic site is in Springfield.

Tom Emery is a writer and researcher from Carlinville who will discuss the short life of Edward Baker Lincoln. He was the second son of Abraham and Mary Todd Lincoln, who died at the age of 4 in 1850.

A later presentation will have Andrew Bowman portraying his ancestor, Andrew Jackson Smith. Smith was a fugitive slave who escaped to fight in the Civil War and was posthumously awarded the Medal of Honor by President Bill Clinton.
