Democrat Anderson will run for Hultgren’s seat

Democrat Dennis Anderson of Gurnee is planning a second run for the congressional seat now held by Republican U.S. Rep. Randy Hultgren of Winfield.

Anderson lost to Hultgren in 2012 by about 16 percentage points and is retired after a career in public health and cancer prevention.

He said he’s motivated to try again in part by the Republican U.S. House’s attempts to repeal President Barack Obama’s health care law.

“I think it’s been a waste of time,” Anderson said. “There just hasn’t been any movement in Washington.”

Hultgren is serving his sophomore term in Congress after being the lone Republican suburban freshman to survive election challenges in 2012.

“We just have a fundamental difference of opinion on the role of the federal government,” Hultgren said.

Whether either candidate faces a March primary battle remains to be seen.

The 14th Congressional District includes parts of northern and western Lake County, most of Kane and McHenry counties and parts of DuPage, Kendall, Will and DeKalb counties.
