Galesburg woman pleads guilty in student’s death

GALESBURG, Ill. — A Galesburg woman has pleaded guilty in connection with a hit-and-run accident that killed a Knox College student last October.

WGIL Radio reported that 34-year-old Lakeesha Smith entered the plea Wednesday afternoon to charges of reckless homicide and leaving the scene of a deadly accident. Her sentencing is Nov. 13. Police contend Knox College Junior Tundun Lawani was crossing the street on Oct. 28 when Smith struck and killed her. Authorities say Smith was found hours later at her home.

Smith’s plea wasn’t part of an agreement with prosecutors, but they agreed to drop several charges. They also said they will ask for a sentence of no more than nine years in prison.
