Swim warning issued for Lake Michigan shores

The National Weather Service is warning swimmers along Lake Michigan in Illinois and Indiana.

Forecasters issued a beach hazards statement on Thursday that says the swim hazard risk is high along Lake Michigan. The risk stretches from the Illinois and Wisconsin state line through Chicago and into Indiana. It ends at the edge of LaPorte County in Indiana.

The weather service says a high swim risk means dangerous waves and currents are expected along the shore. They say swimming conditions could be life threatening. The warning lasts until 9 p.m. on Thursday.

Forecasters expect waves to average 3 to 5 feet and wind speeds at 15 mph.
