Burglar fatally stabbed by homeowner

Chicago police say a homeowner on the city’s far South Side stabbed to death a burglar during a struggle in which the burglar came at him with a hammer.

Police say the 44-year-old homeowner in the city’s West Pullman neighborhood went to his garage at about 3:15 a.m. Thursday when he heard an alarm. There, he confronted the 52-year-old burglar, who then grabbed a hammer and tried to attack him. The homeowner stabbed him during a struggle. Police say the burglar somehow made his way to a nearby hospital, where he died.

Police have not released the homeowner’s name and the Cook County medical examiner’s office on Thursday night said they could not release the dead man’s name because his next of kin had not been notified.
