No good comes from owning assault weapons

I am writing to support your editorial position on the banning of assault weapons (July 14) by government entities at all levels, national to local community. No good, and potentially much harm, will come by allowing legal ownership of these weapons by the general public. They are not needed by anyone who wishes to own firearms for legitimate purposes of sport, target shooting, home and personal protection. They can and do, all too easily, get into the hands of people who use them to produce unspeakable horror in the lives of innocent people.

The recent tragedies caused by the use of these weapons, that are now forever a part of our American history, speak to this point. I wish to state (to add some perspective to my viewpoint) that I have been a gun owner since growing up in the rural South in the 1950s.
