Elgin man arrested after storage unit search turns up marijuana

A 31-year-old man faces felony charges after nearly two pounds of marijuana were found in a storage locker in Elgin in August 2012, according to police and court records.

Fidel W. Garcia, of the 0-99 block of Jefferson Avenue, Elgin, was arrested Monday and faces up to seven years in prison on the possession with intent to deliver charge of between 500 and 2,000 grams of marijuana.

He is due in court on July 30. His bail has been set at $1 million, meaning he must post $100,000 to be released while his case is pending.

According to Elgin police, authorities obtained a search warrant for a storage facility for Aug. 13, 2012, after an anonymous complaint that a man would visit his locker twice a day but only stay for 10 minutes each time.

“This made the anonymous subject suspicious of (someone) storing drugs inside the unit,” read part of the police report.

A search dog alerted officers to possible drugs in a locker and police found three large bags containing 797.6 grams of marijuana in a three-drawer storage bin inside the locker. Authorities also found family photographs, a paystub and other items inside the unit, the report said.

Elgin police were not immediately available to comment on the street value of the marijuana or where Garcia was arrested.

According to Kane County court records, Garcia has minor drug offenses on his record for possession of small amounts of marijuana and drug paraphernalia. But he also spent time in jail for at least 12 arrests for driving without a license, while his license was suspended or revoked, according to court records.

Garcia’s attorney information was not immediately available.
