Cops: Downers Grove couple died in murder-suicide

A Downers Grove couple found fatally stabbed in their home died in an apparent murder-suicide, police said Monday.

Officers found the bodies of Thomas F. Smith, 41, and Jennifer M. Smith, 39, while conducting a well-being check Friday on the 6200 block of Park Avenue.

Police said evidence indicates Thomas Smith killed his wife, then committed suicide. It appeared no one else was present, including the couple’s 11-year-old daughter, who is now staying with relatives, according to Lt. Mike Willison.

Willison declined to release further details Monday.

“The village of Downers Grove extends sympathies to the family involved in this tragic incident,” he said in a news release.

The Smiths purchased the 3,300-square-foot home in 2004, according to public records. Neighbors said they were quiet and kept to themselves but were never a problem to anyone in the neighborhood.
