Congregation Kneseth Israel to observe Tisha B’Av July 15

Submitted by Congregation Kneseth Israel

Tisha B’Av, the ninth day of the Hebrew month of Av, is the saddest day of the Jewish calendar.

On this day, the first and second temples were destroyed. On this day, the Jews were expelled from Spain 1492, and the Edict of Expulsion from England occurred on this day in 1290. On this day, Jews fast, read from the book of lamentations and refrain from joyful activities.

At 7:30 p.m. Monday, July 15, Congregation Kneseth Israel will observe this holiday. Rabbi Margaret Frisch Klein will lead a discussion on the meaning of this holiday in modern times. Services will conclude with a story by the famed Rabbi Arthur Waskow.

Congregation Kneseth Israel is at 330 Division St., in Elgin.

Call (847) 741-5656.
