Man shot, killed by Kane County officer

A veteran with the Kane County sheriff's office shot and killed a man who pointed a gun at officers Monday in an unincorporated area near Batavia, police said.

Deputies responded to a call of a suicidal man with a gun about noon at a home on Elfstrom Trail, police said.

When officers arrived, the 52-year-old man, who lives at the residence, was outside with a rifle. Police said they requested the man drop the gun, at which point he pointed it at officers.

A sergeant shot the man, who died Monday night at Mercy Center Hospital in Aurora, police said.

No other injuries were reported.

The officer, a 20-year veteran of the sheriff's office, is on paid administrative leave pending a review of the shooting.

Illinois State Police and the sheriff's office continue to investigate.
