Chicago woman struck by car, killed in Michigan

GENEVA TOWNSHIP, Mich. — An 18-year-old woman from Chicago has died after being struck by a car driven by an 18-year-old man in patchy fog in southwestern Michigan.

The Van Buren County sheriff’s department identified the victim as Ayala Shulman. She and another female were walking on 68th Street in Geneva Township early Thursday when she was hit by a Toyota Camry 35 miles west of Kalamazoo.

Authorities say the driver was trying to avoid the other pedestrian when his car struck Shulman. She was wearing black clothes on a dark, rural road with patchy fog present.

The sheriff’s department says alcohol and speed were not factors.
