N. Aurora bicyclist fatally struck by car near Batavia

A 50-year-old North Aurora man was killed Thursday afternoon after his bicycle was hit by a car near Batavia, officials said.

Kane County Sheriff's officials responded to the area of Nelson Lake Road south of Main Street in Batavia Township around 2:15 p.m. on Thursday for a report of a car versus bicycle crash, according to a news release.

Police said that Richard White, 50, of North Aurora, was traveling north on Nelson Lake Road near the entrance to the Dick Young Forest Preserve. White was biking with traffic on the side of the road, was not wearing a helmet and had headphones on, police said.

Witnesses told police that other cars swerved to avoid White, but a 2009 Nissan Rogue failed to go around and struck the rear tire of White's bicycle, causing him to be thrown from the bike, according to the release.

White was taken to Presence Mercy Medical Center in Aurora where he was pronounced dead.

The driver of the Nissan, a 26-year-old woman from Evanston, was not injured and was issued a ticket for failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident, police said.

Nelson Lake Road was closed for about three hours while police reconstructed the crash, which is still under investigation, according to the release.
