Wash. bridge collapse survivor says she can’t swim
MOUNT VERNON, Wash. — A woman who survived the bridge collapse in Washington state says she doesn’t know how to swim.
Sally Sligh says her husband pulled her out of the water and kept her calm after their pickup truck fell into the Skagit River last Thursday when the Interstate 5 bridge collapsed. She tells KING-TV her husband is her hero.
The hospice nurse was in the hospital overnight after the accident.
Work crews pulled their truck out of the river Monday.
The Washington State Department of Transportation says the rest of the cleanup operation will be done carefully due to uncertainty over the stability of the wreckage.
Tuesday is the first normal work and school day since the bridge collapse, so state officials are asking drivers in the area to allow an extra 30-to-60 minutes for their morning drive around the detours.
