Grayslake North savors Fox title

Grayslake North’s baseball team enjoyed a well-deserved day off Thursday.

The Knights got to celebrate Wednesday after beating Woodstock North 15-5 to clinch their first Fox Valley Conference Fox Division championship.

Grayslake North (17-7, 12-6) pounded out 16 hits, including three apiece by Matt Eney and Andrew Mikusa, each of whom scored 3 runs. Nick Carmody, JP Zalewski and Sammy Stanfel had 2 hits apiece for the Knights. Zalewski and Adam Gomski had 4 and 3 RBI, respectively. Stanfel and Kyle McBrien had doubles. Carl Russell (1-for-3) and McBrien (1-for-2) drove in a pair of runs each.

The beneficiary of all the offense was starting pitcher Alex Alvarez, who threw 5 innings. The junior did not allow an earned run, while striking out seven and walking only one.

Grayslake Central 10, Woodstock North 0: Kevin Peloza tossed his third shutout of the season Thursday, improving his record to 5-0 in the Fox Valley Fox finale for both squads.

The senior lefty fanned six and allowed 3 singles, as Grayslake Central (19-12, 11-8) snapped a four-game losing streak.

Offensively for the Rams, Matt Loeffl had a double, single and 3 RBI. AJ Hord added a pair of singles for Grayslake Central, which hosts Maine West today.
