After weeks of speculation, former congressman Bob Dold on Wednesday made it official.

The Kenilworth Republican plans to make a 2014 bid to reclaim the 10th Congressional District seat he narrowly lost last November to congressman Brad Schneider, a Deerfield Democrat.

Dold, in a letter released early this afternoon, cited "frustration with the current lack of compromise and the consistent stalemate in Washington" as his reason for announcing his campaign.

"With deep reflection, and strong support from you, Danielle and our kids, my family and friends, I wanted to share with you first that I've made the decision to step forward and run in 2014 to represent the 10th District of Illinois," he wrote.

Talk by top Republican officials and Dold's ever-growing war chest have fueled speculation about a bid over the last few weeks.

In mid-April, National Republican Committee Chair Greg Walden told the Daily Herald he was "hopeful" Dold would run again and was encouraging him to do so.

Walden described Dold as one of the party's best campaigners and said Illinois "still holds a lot of promise for us to take back seats."

Thanks in part to a new congressional map drawn by Democrats and the coattails of President Barack Obama, a Chicagoan, Illinois' congressional delegation flipped in November's election to being highly Democratic.

Dold did not immediately return calls seeking comment.
