Robbins man charged in 2011 beating death

A suburban Chicago man is charged with first-degree murder in the 2011 death of a man who was severely beaten the previous year.

Cook County Sheriff Tom Dart says that 27-year-old Harlandez Meals of Robbins allegedly beat another man, Scott Soderlund. It happened outside a Robbins liquor store in July 2010 after an argument. Authorities say Soderlund broke free, but Meals allegedly ran him down, knocked him to the ground and continued to punch and kick him in the head.

Soderlund died of his injuries on March 9, 2011. The Cook County Medical Examiner’s Office ruled his death a homicide.

Dart says Meals was arrested on Monday, and charges were approved on Tuesday. The sheriff’s department announced the arrest on Wednesday.

Bond has been set at $1 million.
