Illinois prisoner charged in 3rd Menard murder

SPRINGFIELD — For the third time in as many months, the death of a Menard prison inmate has resulted in a murder charge.

Randolph County State’s Attorney Jeremy Walker told The Associated Press Wednesday he’s filed a murder charge against 38-year-old ex-Menard inmate Frank Wings.

Walker said Wings allegedly strangled William Crowder March 26 in their cell in the maximum-security lockup’s segregation unit.

Wings has been transferred to the prison in Pontiac. He is serving a 25-year sentence for armed robbery and is scheduled for release in 2023.

Crowder’s murder is the third at Menard since Jason Hall was beaten and strangled Jan. 31. Yusuf Abuzir was beaten Jan. 25 and died Feb. 25.

Wings’s attorney did not immediately return a call seeking comment.
