Ill. powwow lacks money, on hold for 2013
LE ROY — The organizers of an annual American Indian powwow in central Illinois say they won’t hold the event this year because they don’t have the money.
Angelo Padro is a member of the board at the Grand Village of the Kickapoo park in Le Roy where the intertribal powwow is usually held. He tells The Pantagraph newspaper in Bloomington that the powwow should be back next year. He noted donations to the event are down over the past year.
The powwow has been held for all but one of the past 15 years in Le Roy. The town is 15 miles southeast of Bloomington.
The event started in 1998 and draws branches of the Kickapoo tribe from Texas, Oklahoma, Kansas and Mexico. The powwow usually draws about 2,000 people.
