Use extra money for disease awareness

As a Lake County resident I read with interest the Tuesday headline article about the unique decision that the Forest Preserve District faces: extra money and what to do with it. To be “in the black” is a rare occurrence and I as a taxpayer applaud you.

I enjoy many recent additions and completions of Forest Preserve paths in my area. They are beautiful and well maintained. I propose that some of the extra money be designated for a heightened awareness of the growing epidemic of Lyme disease.

As we look for Spring to spring, (finally I might add), please know that there are millions of deer tics emerging from the ground. They live a two-year cycle. The life-changing and threatening disease and its co-infections are on the rise.

Information about the increase of Lyme in Lake County is readily available. Entrances and exits to parks and paths would be a great place to locate something such as: “A deadly companion might accompany you on your ride home. Did you check?”

There are rest areas too, where information could be attached or placed behind one of those heavy plastic permanent signs.

I have a strong interest in Lyme Awareness. My daughter contracted the disease over six years ago and continues to fight the deadly effects. It is a life changer for her and our family.
