Two teens rescued from Lake Zurich
Two teenagers were rescued from an ice shelf on Lake Zurich yesterday after falling into the cold water with two other children. Officials said the teens had reportedly been walking together on the ice with a 9-year-old boy and 7-year-old girl when they all fell into the water off the beach adjacent to Paulus Park. Full story.
Rose-less, Noah-less Bulls end Heat’s 27-game streak
A raucous atmosphere at the United Center turned festive right around 10 last night as the short-handed Bulls rose to the occasion and ended Miami’s 27-game winning streak with a 101-97 victory. The Heat’s streak was retired six games short of the American professional sports record of 33, set by the 1971-72 Los Angeles Lakers. Aurora man accused of threatening judge
A 25-year-old Aurora man will appear in bond court this morning on a felony charge that he threatened a Cook County circuit court judge. Alexander Wood, of the 900 block of Oakland Lane, left an anonymous voice mail on a public defender’s phone March 7 indicating he wanted “the death and destruction” of the judge who presided over his case, according to the Cook County sheriff’s office. Naperville man accused of stalking Batavia woman
A 51-year-old Naperville man is charged with stalking his ex-girlfriend and repeatedly violating an order of protection the Batavia woman had obtained against him, according to police and court records. Joseph A. Donato, of the 1100 block of West Ogden Avenue, is charged with felony aggravated stalking, stalking, five counts of misdemeanor violation of a no contact order and violation of an order of protection. Kane County to use $7.6 million surplus for raises, pensions
New numbers show Kane County finished the 2012 fiscal year with $7.6 million more than it needed — but taxpayers shouldn’t expect a refund. Instead, county officials moved yesterday to dedicate the surplus to raises, pension payments and future infrastructure needs. Full story.
18 people charged in Lake County drug ring arrests
Seventeen men and women from Lake County and one from California have been arrested and charged with various drug crimes in connection with what authorities say was the operation of a large drug ring. Authorities said many of those indicted are known gang members who used their gang connections to distribute the drugs. Full story.
Lindenhurst hospital proposal denied by state board
An application to build a $131 million hospital in Lindenhurst was denied yesterday, although it appears Vista Health System intends to continue the process. The Illinois Health Facilities and Services Review Board, meeting in Bloomington, voted 6-0 for an intent to deny the application to build a 132-bed hospital at Grand Avenue and Deep Lake Road. Schaumburg officials praise police chief’s service
Ten days before his April 5 retirement, embattled Schaumburg Police Chief Brian Howerton praised and was praised by his elected bosses at his final village board meeting as the town’s top law enforcement officer. Howerton, who joined the force at age 20 and has been chief for the past four years, received a plaque commemorating his 32 years of service to Schaumburg. Full story.
Judge: Free ultrasounds can continue through August in Elgin
A federal judge yesterday extended until August a temporary restraining order allowing TLC Pregnancy Services to continue offering women free ultrasounds in its mobile facility while its dispute with the City of Elgin is pending. TLC representatives say they have offered the services for about two years in the parking lots of J.B.’s Pub and evangelical Church of Elgin. Full story.

Ex-Bulls’ center Tom Boerwinkle dies
No one spent more time with the Bulls without playing for another team than ex-center Tom Boerwinkle. During his 10 seasons with the team he set a franchise record by grabbing 37 rebounds during a 1970 game against Phoenix, and in recent years he was a frequent visitor to the United Center. Boerwinkle died at age 67 after a long illness. Full story.
Northwestern hires Duke assistant Collins as coach
Northwestern hired longtime Duke assistant Chris Collins last night to replace the fired Bill Carmody, hoping he can finally lead the Wildcats to the NCAA tournament and into the upper echelon of the Big Ten. Full story.
