North Chicago officer charged in fatal crash
CHICAGO — A suburban Chicago police officer has been charged after he allegedly drove the wrong way on Lake Shore Drive and caused a crash that killed two people.
Terrell Garrett faces aggravated driving under the influence and reckless homicide. The North Chicago Police Department placed him on administrative leave.
Garrett, who was off-duty at the time, was injured in the crash and is in serious condition at Advocate Illinois Masonic Center. It was immediately unclear if he has an attorney.
Friday’s crash shut down the roadway for five hours. Witnesses told police the wrong-way driver was traveling at least 60 mph in a 45-mph zone.
North Chicago Police Chief James Jackson says his department has “no tolerance for officers whose actions fall outside” the laws they are asked to enforce.
