Durbin proposes measures to help wounded veterans

U.S. Sen. Dick Durbin is proposing two legislative measures that would boost research into orthotics and prosthetics care for service members and veterans.

The Democratic senator from Illinois announced the legislation Monday.

The proposals would authorize grants to colleges and universities interested in training specialists in the field of neuromuscular, skeletal and limb injuries.

Durbin says veterans who suffered serious injuries in the line of duty should expect nothing less than the highest standard of care throughout their lives

His proposals would build on the work done at Chicago’s Northwestern University and Rehabilitation Institute.

Durbin says there are only about 7,100 specialists nationwide in the area of orthotics and prosthetics. He says existing degree programs are not enough to meet the demand for new practitioners.
