Water rises, but Des Plaines officials unworried

Des Plaines officials say they're not concerned about rising water levels along Des Plaines River that began spilling over Campground Road Monday afternoon.

The National Weather Service issued flood warnings through Wednesday evening for the Des Plaines River in Lake and Cook counties, as well as the Fox River in Kane and Kendall counties and the east branch of the DuPage River near Bolingbrook in Will County.

Melting snow has caused river levels to rise.

By Monday evening, river levels rose to 4.22 feet in Des Plaines, whereas 5 feet is considered flooding, said Amy Seeley, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service.

River levels in Des Plaines are expected to peak tomorrow afternoon at 4.8 feet, she said.

While water closed Campground Road, River Road remains open. Police and fire officials remain hopeful that meteorologists are right.

“Fingers crossed. I will say anything's possible in this town,” said police Sgt. Jeff Rotkvich. “One of our guys monitors the water so we can get prepared, but we're not hearing anything as of right now.”
