Victim of Elgin crash identified

One man died and a woman was severely injured after a two-vehicle car crash Sunday afternoon in Elgin, police said.

A passing driver called police at 2:32 p.m. about the crash, which occurred on a Route 20 bridge over the railroad tracks east of Shales Parkway, Elgin police Cmdr. Glenn Theriault said.

Alberto Dominguez, 24, of Elgin, was pronounced dead at the scene, police said.

Dominguez was driving a blue Honda Civic traveling west and veered into the eastbound lane and into the path of an oncoming minivan, Theriault said.

The woman driving the other car, a red Mercury Villager minivan, was transported with serious injuries to St. Alexius Medical Center in Hoffman Estates, Theriault said.

The impact was so forceful that the Honda Civic was split in two; the front end, including the dashboard and the engine, came to rest facing west, while the back end, including the driver's seat and passenger seats came to rest facing east.

Both vehicles' air bags deployed, and debris from the crash was scattered along the roadway and all the way down the hill toward the railroad tracks.

“Someone drove up and called. We don't even know that we have a witness to (the crash),” Theriault said.

Route 20 was closed between Shales Parkway and Lambert Drive for more than four hours while the Elgin Police Department Traffic Unit completed their investigation.

Police continue to investigate the crash. Anyone with information is encouraged to call (847) 289-2661.
