Dogs die, but 5 people rescued from burning home

Two dogs were killed but five people were successfully rescued from a second-story deck after fire struck a single-family home near Lincolnshire around noon Thursday. One of the people rescued was a wheelchair-bound woman who was taken to Advocate Condell Medical Center in Libertyville with non-life-threatening injuries. Full story.

Dozens attend Buffalo Grove candidate forum

Trustees Beverly Sussman, Andrew Stein and Lester Ottenheimer III joined Jeff Batinnus in a forum hosted by the group Save Buffalo Grove at Village Tavern and Grill after canceling earlier in the week amid concerns about legal violations. In the first hour, Sussman and Ottenheimer introduced themselves to a standing-room-only crowd and gave their opinions on a controversial concept for a downtown to possibly be built on the village golf course. Stein was not in the room during their discussion, so in the second hour he and Batinnus discussed the same issues and took similar questions from the audience. Full story.

Student accused of putting camera in Crystal Lake locker room

A 17-year-old Crystal Lake Central High School student will appear in bond court this morning after he was charged with unauthorized use of a video recording device in a boys’ locker room at the school. Luke Patrick Gildea of Crystal Lake is scheduled to appear at the McHenry County courthouse in Woodstock. A pinhole camera was discovered in the boys’ extracurricular locker room. Full story.

Groups share their views on Muhammad

Two Muslim groups hosted a presentation last night at College of Lake County in Grayslake to raise awareness about what they say is the true good character of Prophet Muhammad. It was one of 50 presentations of “Muhammad Messenger of Peace” planned across the country by Ahmadiyya Muslim Community of the United States of America. The organization’s branch serving Lake County and southeastern Wisconsin co-hosted the Grayslake program with the CLC Muslim Student Association. Full story.

Let’s add to all the Blackhawks records tonight

The Hawks have won a franchise record 11 games in a row, own the NHL record for best start at 24 games without a loss in regulation, and are within five games now of Philadelphia’s league mark of 35 games with at least a point. They are 13-0-3 in 1-goal games. “I’d say No. 1, it’s really exciting for our fans,” captain Jonathan Toews said. At 8 p.m. they take on the Avalanche. Full story.

But ... Blackhawks’ Sharp to miss three weeks?

While Patrick Sharp didn’t make the trip to Denver for Friday’s rematch with the Avalanche, Marian Hossa, Andrew Shaw and Steve Montador were on the Blackhawks’ team charter that left yesterday. Sharp was injured in the third period when he was checked hard into the glass by Avs defenseman Ryan O’Byrne and left the ice holding his left shoulder. NBC Sports Network reported late last night that Sharp could miss three weeks the injury. Full story.

Big Ten women’s tournament: Wisconsin beats Illinois 58-57

Morgan Paige scored 18 points, including two free throws with 3 seconds remaining, and 11th-seeded Wisconsin held on to beat Illinois 58-57 in the first round of the Big Ten tournament yesterday. Full story.
