Proposed settlement in 2009 Michigan drowning of St. Charles man

SOUTH HAVEN, Mich. — A proposed settlement with the family of a St. Charles man who drowned in 2009 while saving family members from rough waters off southwestern Michigan includes beach safety measures.

The Kalamazoo Gazette reports South Haven expects the settlement with the family of Martin Jordan to be approved in the coming weeks. The 45-year-old from St. Charles drowned Aug. 1, 2009, after saving his son and others.

One of the terms of the agreement is installing 911 call boxes at North Beach and South Beach along Lake Michigan. City officials hope to have the units installed by Memorial Day.

The lawsuit seeks more than $25,000 in damages. City Council discussed the issue in closed session this week and agreed to have the city attorney work out final details.
