Man killed in I-294 crash

A man was killed in a crash Tuesday afternoon on I-294 that smashed his Mercedes-Benz between a semi and the median wall.

Des Plaines firefighters believe weather played a role in the crash that happened at about 3:55 p.m. — during some of the heaviest snowfall of the day — in the northbound lanes just north of Oakton.

“The car sustained very heavy damage,” said Fire Chief Alan Wax. “In order to get the driver out, it took extrication efforts and crews worked to try to resuscitate the victim. Crews did a great job and got him out in 13 minutes, which is very rapidly.”

The victim was transported to Lutheran General Hospital. He did not survive, Wax said.

Two left lanes remained blocked for hours while officers investigated the crash. It remains under investigation by Illinois State Police.

The victim’s name is being withheld pending notification of his family.
