More gun laws won’t help our situation

As this nation continues debating an assault weapon ban, let’s look at the facts. An assault weapon is capable of firing in a fully automatic capacity. These weapons are currently illegal in Illinois. Our government does a poor job of keeping track of weapons sold through legitimate gun dealers.

The one issue that has not come up in discussion is how as a society we have lost our moral compass. With 27,000 laws on the books concerning firearm ownership, how will more correct this problem? Stop demonizing the NRA — they are a legitimate lobbying group working in the interest of their members. The fact that they have a lot of power shows how many Americans agree with them.

Until we fix the underlying social and moral issues, gun violence will continue in our society.
