Your thyroid is a gland located at the base of the neck just below the Adam's apple. The thyroid gland influences the body's metabolism and the functions of some of the body's most important organs including the brain, heart, liver, kidneys, and skin. Because the thyroid does so much for us, it is important to make sure it is functioning just as it should.

As many as 30 million Americans have thyroid disease, yet half of them do not know it. Thyroid disease is more common then diabetes or heart disease. Thyroid cancer is one of the fastest growing cancers yet it is one of the most curable. Meaning, a lot can be done if spotted early.

Iodine is the building block of the thyroid hormone. Iodine can be found in many food products we consume. Iodine can be found in some table salts, seafood products, and it is added to flour. Therefore eating breads and pastas can give you the iodine intake you are looking for. Many food labels will inform you on whether or not the product has iodine.

Possible symptoms of having a thyroid disease are:

o Fatigue

o weight changes

o depression and anxiety

o cholesterol issues

o family history

o menstrual irregularities/fertility problems

o bowel problems

o hair/skin changes

o neck discomfort/enlargement

o muscle/joint pains

If any of these apply to you, and you suspect something may be wrong make an appointment to see an endocrinologist. The more you know about your personal health, the more you can be sure, and the better results you can get.
