Burglars will get in if they want to

The magic and wonderment of the season ended with our home being burglarized the day after Christmas. During late afternoon, within a 45-minute span of no one being home, our privacy was invaded, leaving us feeling vulnerable and violated. We've learned that deadbolts on the door are no deterrent. Burglars have tools that easily pop open a door. What's the answer?

Officers, evidence technicians and detectives all said that if burglars want to come in, they will get in. There being no absolute deterrent, the best answer we got was to "keep up your insurance." Economic distress and obtaining easy cash for gold are two major reasons for the upswing in home invasions.

Our Arlington Heights police force was professional, helpful and supportive throughout this ordeal. However, they need each one of us to be alert, and if anything or anyone looks suspicious, do not hesitate to call.
