Hospital idea spurns Waukegan

Vista Healthcare should not be pursuing building a new hospital in the western part of Lake County when there remain so many health care needs unmet in the Waukegan area.

It is understandable that people in the growing parts of Lake County want this new hospital, but it should not come at the expense of an area where so many are struggling without jobs and access to care.

When Vista closed St. Therese hospital in 2006, they promised $70 million in investment in local care. To date, nothing close to that has taken place.

We all need to be concerned about access to care for uninsured and low-income residents and the state needs to make sure that the previous commitment to the Waukegan area is honored before they approve a brand new hospital that will move beds and services away from a community that is already underserved.
