Rockford plans Quidditch tourney for Potter fans

ROCKFORD — Call up your best Seeker. Recruit your strongest Beaters. Quidditch is coming to Rockford this spring.

Organizers say fans of the Harry Potter books will play in a Quidditch tournament April 26-27 on the soccer fields at Elliot Golf Course. At least 12 Midwest college teams are expected to compete in pool play followed by single elimination.

This tournament will feature ground Quidditch — a sport resembling field hockey that’s designed for Muggles, or non-wizards. The Quidditch game described in J.K. Rowling’s novels involved flying broomsticks and other magical items.

The Rockford Register Starreports that the April tournament is part of the Rockford Area Convention & Visitors Bureau’s efforts to attract nontraditional sports tournaments.
