St. Charles man killed in crash on Route 25 near Batavia

A St. Charles man was killed Monday morning when the sport utility vehicle he was driving spun out of control, hit a car and flipped over on Route 25 north of Banbury Road near Batavia.

Karl Smith, 45, of the 600 block of Marion Avenue, was pronounced dead at the scene, according to Kane County Sheriff’s spokesman Lt. Patrick Gengler.

According to the sheriff’s office, the crash happened around 9 a.m. Smith was driving a Ford Expedition northbound through a curve, and began to spin out of control. The Expedition crossed the centerline and hit a southbound Honda Accord driven by a Batavia woman.

The Expedition then went off the road on the west side of Route 25 and flipped on to its roof.

The 60-year-old woman was taken to Delnor Hospital with non life-threatening injuries, according to Gengler.

The investigation is ongoing. Deputies don’t know if speed, drugs or alcohol played a role in the crash, according to Gengler.

There were no passengers in either vehicle.
